Types of Skilled Worker Visa Australia:
I. Skilled Independent Visa(Sub-Class 189)

The Australian Government introduced this visa to cater to entice skilled workers to move to Australia. It is a Permanent Visa where candidates must verify that they have the qualification or the skills of an occupation in the Skilled Occupation List (SOL). This visa also requires candidates to get a minimum of 65 points on the point-based qualification system. Applicants will not need sponsorship from family or the Australian Government nomination.

Apart from an unlimited stay in Australia, this visa category enables the candidate get full access to health care benefits and certain social security payments.

It also allows the candidate to apply for citizenship of Australia after staying in the country for 4 years. The main applicant can sponsor his/her family members for permanent residency in Australia as long as they follow the Australian Migration Law.

Eligibility

To qualify for a Skilled Independent Visa, the candidate (or their spouse) must:

  • Be between the age of 18 to 44 years old
  • Be able to demonstrate proficiency in the English language ability (IELTS with minimum 06 out of 09 in all the modules) or (PTE with minimum 50 out of 90 in all the modules)
  • Choose an occupation on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) that pairs with his/her skills, qualifications and work experience.
  • Have a specific work experience, skills and capability (positive skill assessment)
  • Be of good health with no underlying serious health problems
  • Be of good character (no criminal history)
  • Must meet the 65-points mark set for the point-based qualification system

II. Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190)

This is a Permanent Resident Visa which for individuals who cannot meet the Skilled Independent criteria and for those candidates who have occupations those are not in the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). This visa requires the candidate to get patronage from a sponsoring state in Australia and live in that specified state for 2 years. It also calls for the candidate to meet the points test by scoring 60 points and above.

This program gives permanent residents under this class, comprehensive access to health care benefits and certain social security wages. The permanent residents can apply for citizenship of Australia after living in the country for 4 years and can sponsor dependents as long as they follow the Australian Migration Law..

Eligibility

To qualify for skilled nominated visa the applicants have to:

  • Meet the 65-points mark set for the point- based qualification system.
  • Be between 18 and 44 years old.
  • Prove English language proficiency (IELTS with minimum 06 out of 09 in all the modules) or (PTE with minimum 50 out of 90 in all the modules).
  • Choose an occupation in the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) or Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) related to their skills, capabilities and recent work experience. The occupation should be available in the state that will sponsor the state election.
  • Have specific work experience, skills and competence (positive skill assessment)
  • Verify that they have adequate maintenance funds
  • Be of good health with no major health problems
  • Be of great character with no criminal history.

III. Skilled Regional Sponsored Visa (Subclass 489)

This is a provisional Visa granted to individuals who cannot meet the Skilled Independent Visa pass mark for 4 years. This visa provides a chance for the holder to apply for a permanent visa in Australia. It requires a candidate to find patronage from a sponsoring State or Territory regional area or qualifying relative living in a chosen area in Australia. This visa also requires candidates to meet the points test by scoring 60 points and above including the points from the relative/ state sponsor. They give this visa on a provincial level only and require the candidates to live in the stipulated area in Australia for 2 years and work full time.

Holders of visa in this class can only live, work and study in a relative sponsored stipulated area, or a state sponsored regional area of Australia for 4 years.

Provides a chance to the candidate to apply for a permanent visa in Australia after residing in the country for 2 years

Applicants can sponsor their immediate family members, as long as these members meet the requirements set for health, criminal record and English language. The visa also provides immediate family members with a chance to study and work in the stipulated areas of Australia.:

  • Be of good character with no criminal history.

  • X. Partner skills
    Requirement Points
    Your spouse or de facto partner must also be an applicant for this visa and meet age, English and skill criteria.
    For you to be eligible for the award of these points your partner must be an applicant for the same visa subclass and must not be an Australian permanent resident or an Australian citizen. Additionally, you will need to provide evidence that when you were invited to apply for this visa that they:
    • 1)were under 45 years old
    • 2)had competent English
    • 3)had nominated a skilled occupation that is on the same skilled occupation list as your nominated skilled occupation
    • 4)Hada suitable skill assessment from the relevant assessing authority for their nominated skilled occupation, and the assessment wasn’t for a Subclass 485 visa

    For you to be eligible for the award of these points your partner must be an applicant for the same visa subclass and must not be an Australian permanent resident or an Australian citizen.
